Reasons why we recommend replacing timber fascia boards

Capping over rotten timber with a plastic fascia will seal in the rot allowing it to spread.

    1. Every timber fascia board will hold some degree of moisture. Capping over the timber fascia boards will seal in the moisture leading to rot.
    2. Manufacturers of PVCU fascia and soffit boards as well as many installers offer guarantees on the products. In all cases the guarantee will cover the materials, not the structure the boards are fixed to. Ensuring the PVCU products are fixed to a sound structure is vital for longevity of the new roofline product.
    3. Capping over the old fascia boards will result in the new guttering being set slightly further away from the roof. There is a possibility that rainwater could run off the roof and behind the guttering.
    4. Premier Home Improvements roofing division recommends that any tradesman who recommends capping over the existing boards should be avoided.

No painting. No rot. No insect infestation

If the timber looks okay, is it okay to ‘Over Clad’ the timber or ‘Cappit’ as apposed to replacing it with PVCU.

Premier Home Improvements strongly believe that the existing soffit and fascia boards should be fully removed prior to the installation of any new PVCU boards.

It is very common that the timber fascia boards will have some degree of rot, usually on the top edge. This is normally caused either by gutter splash or by water being blown onto the board from behind th gutter. It is difficult to determine and see the rot from ground level. Regular painting of timber fascia boards will offer protection from rot however most homeowners and only paint up to the guttering – not above it.

We have carried out installations, which have been capped over before in the past. These installations often cost more to do than standard replacement jobs, because there is more material to take down and often we find that the ‘rafter ends’ have perished, this leads to additional carpentry work to make good the original rafter ends.

Made from PVCU, our fascias and soffits are colourfast, so they stay looking good year after year. Our PVCU roofing products are low maintenance, never need repainting and an occasional wipe clean with a damp cloth is all that is required.
